When some people outside the city think of New York publicists, I'm sure red-soled Louboutin heels and pencil skirts come to mind. We've all seen that KateHudsonRachelMcAdamsKatherineHeiglwhatever movie. If most of my 20-something colleagues and I attempted that look though, at the end of our 10-hour work day we'd be gimping to the door of our sixth floor walkups in tears. Not only would we be crying, but so would our wallets. Yes, it's true that when you reach a certain level in your career (in
any field) your budget to spend on the latest trends grows. And grows. But right now my friends and I are just working with what we got. And that's the salary of a 1940s factory worker. Finding a cute, practical and mostly inexpensive outfit is an everyday struggle, but one we enjoy (for the most part).
Who doesn't want to stroll out of their doorman building, conveniently situated across from The Met, and skip up to a cab with a Marc Jacobs trench hooked over their finger? But until Donald Trump decides to adopt me, I'm probably going to have to settle for that cute Forever 21 knockoff and the occasional splurge. So come along as my friends and I show you how we make what seems like a totally bleak situation and make it chic.
x, Emily
